Homebodies No. 28 – Felicia Perez

Homebodies explores the personal spaces of community members, the artworks and interesting objects they’ve collected through the years, and how those pieces live with them every day. Felicia is an artist, educator, and storyteller (and former HP Board member!). She recently had an exhibition in the Holland Gallery in collaboration with Of The Sol, entitled Concentrate (Jan 15 – Feb 6, 2025) – an exploration of resilience, transformation, and the deliberate act of reclaiming joy amidst chronic illness. Felicia shares her awesome house with her wife Emily, and their two dogs.

Once you step in our home it becomes clear pretty quickly that collectors, archivists, historians, storytellers, and lovers of art live here.

We moved homes in the first year of the Covid-19 shutdown from a home built in the 1940s to a home built in circa 1905. As trained historians we fell in love with all the little details the previous home owners left behind for us – and we continue to build on the theme they left behind. The entry guest bathroom had a steampunk feel that we decided to lean into with our own antique and art collection that focuses here on medical items for the eye, advertisements regarding gender expectations or performance, and always toys!

What do you do with collections that you inherit from loved ones?! Why, you keep building the collection of course! Started out as my late friend Piper’s collection (with only 6 dolls).

Like any other “photo” in our home, the 3D model/photos of Felicia’s planking is among the other items of her size and importance.

The home office is yet another place where life before us is archived via collections of antique toys and political art for continued inspiration and play and dream up the worlds we want to live in — and then do the work to create it.

Always loving political art and you can make your own at your next local wine and paint event! They didn’t tell us to paint the words “Abolish ICE” on the painting but it gives it that missing pop factor, no? Then there is the right time / wrong moment art from Tim Guthrie (Koch brothers on dollar bills and FDT on airplane vomit bags) and the perfect reminder of how we got here with Angela Peoples’ famous factoid poster at the 2016 Women’s March.
