Visceral
December 18, 2024 – January 10, 2025
Work by Ricardo Rubalcaba Paredes, Presented by Of the Sol Collective in the HP Gallery, closing reception Friday, January 10, 2025
Visceral (pronounced vee-se-ráhl) is a protest, a statement of solidarity with all oppressed people, a proclamation of identity, a reclamation of power, my power, our power. In this series, Rubalcaba Paredes explores surrendering to my discomfort in pursuit of self-discovery. Finding solace in the creation of self-portraits, portraits of kinship, artists, and community organizers to engage in conversations about the formidable strength Queer and Trans Black and Brown folx embody in the face of adversity, their power, and their radical softness. Employing neon color palettes, fluorescent ambient lighting, and airy textiles to create an immersive environment within the work, Visceral delves into probing feelings and questions about safety, community, embodiment, and identity.
